Working on a Cruise Ship

Information about working on a cruise ship

working on a cruise shipWorking on a cruise ship can be one of the most rewarding jobs ever as it will allow you to travel around the world and see all of the beautiful places in the world that you could only have dreamed about visiting before, and you can do all of this and get paid for the pleasure too. Of course you will have to work on the ship, but depending on what department you are working in you can still get a lot of time off to see all of the ports of call that you visit.

While working on a cruise ship can be the most amazing experience, it has to be mentioned that it is also extremely hard work. The hours can be long and the work demanding a lot of the time. You don’t have weekends when you are working on a ship, you work seven days a week for your entire contract so it really doesn’t matter whether it is a Saturday or a Tuesday, your work will be the same.

What else can you get out of working on a cruise ship

Working on a cruise ship will not only give you some incredible experiences of seeing different countries and cities, but it can also be a very good career move for you. There are always opportunities for promotion and moving up through the ranks for those that want it. This can be beneficial for you in many ways as you will learn so much while at work plus the higher the position you get then the more money you will be paid. It can be a very good place to save money when working on a cruise ship too, if this is what you want to do. It can also be a great place to spend a lot of money as you go to so many places and see so many exciting things that you just have to have.

From my own experience of working on a cruise ship, I spent the first three or four contracts just really enjoying myself and spending most of my money, but then after that when you start to visit some of the same places again on different ships then you can start to save more money, and when you try it is possible to save a lot. It is nice to be in a position where you can travel the world, save money and then get a two to three month vacation at the end of it to spend all of your money.

When you start working on a cruise ship you will have safety drummed into you from the very first day. Safety on a cruise ship is the highest priority for everyone and all of the crew will have a safety position and a certain function to perform if the ship ever had an emergency. Most cruise lines have crew drills every cruise, or every other cruise at the most. During these drills the crew practices different emergency scenarios. This is all essential learning as although rare, an emergency can happen. One did happen on one of the ships that I have worked on previously, the Star Princess (although I was not working on it when the emergency happened). In 2006, the Star Princess had a fire that started on a balcony in one of the passenger cabins. It spread rapidly and flames and smoke engulfed a lot of the decks. The captain sounded the emergency signal and the crew and passengers went to the emergency stations and were there for eight hours while the fire fighting crew battled to put the fire out. In the end they did and the life boats were not needed, but the training of the crew enabled the situation to be handled with professionalism and confidence.
